Chapter Thirteen

The next morning, Rory tried to use a hot shower to wake up. Although he’d left Ainsley’s place at midnight while another teammate stood watch, he still didn’t get much sleep. He’d never dealt with being attracted to someone at work, much less the subject of a case. Of course, there were attractive female cops, paramedics, and lawyers he met over the years, but he’d never been distracted by them.

He’d never wished for a do-over on how he met someone before, but he couldn’t help but want one with Ainsley.

What if they’d met at their favorite coffee shop or on the street? Would they have just passed each other by? It was impossible to tell if the rising connection between them was because of the circumstances or a real raw attraction. And even though he was extremely attracted to Ainsley, he still wasn’t interested in a relationship. His job required too much of his focus. At the same time, he couldn’t get the memory of Ainsley’s lips, so soft and full, out of his mind. He wanted to know everything about her, starting with how her skin would feel against his without any clothes to separate them.

The problem wasn’t how they met. The problem was he was pretty sure she was the type of woman that dated a different kind of man, and he didn’t have the space in his life for the attention she would need.

The fact that they came from totally different backgrounds was just the easiest reason to discount any attraction. She came from privilege and the kind of wealth that always flew first class, never needed to save up for a new stove, or worry about retirement. Not that Ainsley acted snobby in any way. If he had to guess, she didn’t accept a dime of money from her father. But it wasn’t her socioeconomic status. It was her glamour. She was stunning, poised, and driven.

There was no way her goals included settling down with someone that would have to work nights and weekends. She was the kind of woman that married a man with a private jet and probably several homes. The kind of man who could work a few hours a day, if at all, and make enough money to take her on international vacations every season.

Cutting off the hot water in the shower, he stood under the stream of now-cooling water, letting it turn ice cold before he shut it off. He needed to wake up and stop thinking about the kind of man Ainsley would marry and worry more about the people who might threaten her safety.

Just because she made the best of being stuck with him all weekend and was nice to his family at Sunday dinner didn’t mean they were even compatible.

Just because he felt drawn to her didn’t mean she felt anything remotely similar.

And this was why he couldn’t get into anything close to a real relationship. It was too distracting, and he needed to focus on keeping her safe and figuring out who her father was worried about.
